Chris Getz, your 2009 second baseman
Sports, atm March 22nd, 2009Following yesterday’s thumping at the hands of the Cubs, Ozzie Guillen named his starting second baseman for Opening Day. That man is Chris Getz. I really like this decision from a long term perspective. A lot of people were clamoring for them to roll with Gordon Beckham, last year’s #1 pick, but I think that would have been the wrong move.
Beckham looked OK this spring, but he had a rought stretch as of late that took him out of the running. The biggest reason I like this move is that I remained convinced that Beckham is our future shortstop. I think Alexei Ramirez is going to flop as a fielder and will move to the OF in the next couple of years. So long term I wouldn’t want Beckham changing positions. Plus, you don’t need a rookie trying to learn a new position.
Getz also could end up being a leadoff hitter. I suspect that if he gets off to a decent start Ozzie will consider it. Mostly because I think whoever starts in CF, Owens or Wise, will be terrible leadoff hitters.
I try not to get too wrapped up in spring stats, but Paul Konerko’s big spring doesn’t mean much since he has done that the last couple of years and it hasn’t meant anything. Josh Fields has his average way up, and maybe that talk about him being a more selective hitter is true. The knock on Fields has always been his inability to make contact. He struck out 17 times in 32 ABs last year. If he has figured that out, and let’s not be greedy, and can sustain a .280 average with 20+ home runs, he is going to be a solid contributor. AJ has also had a pretty nice spring, something he is not known for.
