10 Movies in 2009 that intrigue me: Part 2

Top 10s, atm No Comments »

I want to preface this by saying I don’t know if I will see any of these movies in the theatre (or at all) but going through IMDb’s calender to see all movies coming out in 2009. These are the 10 that intrigued me the most, in (planned) release date order:

The Year One

Basic Plot: Two lazy cavemen (?) get banished and set off on a journey through the ancient world.

Why does it intrigue me: If that plot sounds weird, it’s not just you. Apparently a screwball comedy of sorts. Why did it catch my eye? Well Michael Cera makes his 2nd appearance on this list playing one of the cavemen. The other? My brother from another mother Jack Black plays the other. Oh, and Harold Ramis wrote and directed it. Someone compared it to Meatballs which I never saw. Apparently the movie also has Oliver Platt, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Hank Azaria, Paul Rudd and Ramis himself. This has flop written all over it, but who knows. Rental for sure.

Release Date: June 19th

Public Enemies

Basic Plot: A movie about John Dillinger and the FBI’s attempts to catch him in the ’30s.

Why does it intrigue me: A side note, if you want to team two the hottest, trendiest stars for an action/drama, who do you go with? If you said Christian Bale and Johnny Depp, then this is your movie. Depp plays Dillinger and Bale plays the FBI bureau chief. Billy Crudup (Almost Famous) plays J. Edgar Hoover which is a nice touch. The plot is what really gets me into this movie. I am not big on Depp. I acknowledge he is talented but he hasn’t made a lot of movies I love. Maybe this one changes it. Bale’s career has really taken off since he became Batman. This guy has been around for almost 20 years though (amazing since he is only 34). I bet my dad would see this in the theatre. I could be persuaded.

Release Date: July 1st

Fanboys

Basic Plot: Some nerds can’t wait any longer to see Star Wars: Phantom Menace (oh, the irony) so they road trip to George Lucas’ Skywalker Ranch to steal a copy of the movie.

Why does it intrigue me: This movie was supposed to come out a while ago. At one point Kevin Smith was going to direct but he is long gone. Being a Star Wars nerd when I was a kid, and a geek in general, the concept is cool. I guess the fact that they are trying to hard to see a movie that we all know sucks is even funnier. Comedy movies have gotten a revival as of late with Judd Apatow, so who knows. I am sure I will rent this.

Release Date: Feburary 6th

Youth in Revolt

Basic Plot: From IMDb, “While his trailer trash parents teeter on the edge of divorce, 14-year-old Nick sets his sights on dream girl Sheeni Saunders, hoping that she’ll be the one to take away his virginity.”

Why does it intrigue me: I liked Michael Cera in Superbad and Juno. Justin Long (the Mac from the Apple ads), Steve Buschemi, and Ray Liotta also star. This is probably the weakest movie on the list, but I needed a 10th. I can’t find a trailer for this despite the fact that is comes to the US in February

Release Date: February 20th (limited release)
